Today, the 27th of July, 2009 is a happy day for many Cuban bloggers: Yoani Sánchez has just won another journalism award (María Moors Cabot). In this instance, it is a Special Mention. For those who may not know this small and restless Cuban, it may only mean one more sign of praise among the ones she has received since over a year ago, but those of us who are close to her know that it is about fair homage to limitless dedication, sacrifice and talent.
When I met Yoani, a little over four years ago, I never thought that such a simple girl, to all outward appearances intelligent and sure of herself, would have such great influence on my aspirations to citizen journalism. Nobody could imagine such character and such will under such a fragile appearance. Thanks to her, who is much younger than I am, I would be able to find, almost by happenstance, the way and the knowledge needed to express myself freely. She has been the soul and the bell of a significant group of bloggers who have nourished on her mastery of technology and of her uncountable sleepless nights in pursuit of sustaining the wings of a dream that is multiplying itself.
I want to make public my joy and pride for this award to our flagship blogger, with the assurance of expressing with it the sincere sentiment of those of us who have already been rewarded by her friendship, her generosity, and her trust.
